Short answer: Amsterdam is one of the easiest European cities for a woman travelling alone: compact, walkable and English-speaking, with normal big-city caution needed for pickpockets, bikes and drinks at night. Stay in the Jordaan, the Nine Streets, De Pijp or the Museum Quarter for quiet evenings. And if you’d rather not eat dinner alone, I’m Milan, an independent male escort and discreet male companion, bookable from €120 for dinner, a walk or more. A first name is enough.

Alone in Amsterdam, by choice

Travelling alone as a woman is one of the great freedoms. You eat when you want, walk where you want, and nobody negotiates the plan. Amsterdam is a very good city to do it in. It’s small enough to walk across in an hour, almost everyone speaks English, and the canals are beautiful at every time of day.

This page is a practical guide: where to stay, how to stay safe, how to spend your evenings and, if you want it, how to have company for one of them. I’m Milan, an independent male escort and gigolo for women and couples aged 21 and over. I work for myself, without an agency, and I come to Amsterdam from my base between Brabant and Utrecht. Some solo travellers book me just for dinner and a walk. Others want more. Both are fine.

Where to stay in Amsterdam as a solo female traveller

Jordaan

Narrow canals, small cafés and galleries, and a village feel right next to the centre. Lively in the early evening, quiet at night. Brown cafés like Café ’t Smalle on the Egelantiersgracht are lovely for a drink on your own.

Nine Streets

The Nine Streets (De 9 Straatjes) cross the main canals between the Jordaan and the centre: boutiques, cafés and some of the city’s finest canal-house hotels.

De Pijp

Young, busy and full of small restaurants, around the Albert Cuyp Market. Great for eating out alone; plenty of places with a bar to sit at.

Museum Quarter and Oud-Zuid

Elegant, green and calm, near the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Concertgebouw and the Vondelpark. The quietest choice for a good night’s sleep.

Plantage and Oost

Leafy streets near the Artis zoo and the Hortus Botanicus, a short tram ride from the centre, and slightly away from the crowds.

The Red Light District

Fascinating to walk through in the early evening, but noisy and crowded at night, with groups of tourists. If you want calm, don’t sleep there. More in male sex workers in the Red Light District?

Safety tips for women travelling alone in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is generally a safe city, but like any big tourist destination it has its risks. The UK government’s travel advice and the city’s own visitor service, I amsterdam, give the same basic tips:

  • Pickpockets. Keep valuables close, especially on trams, at Centraal Station and in crowds. Don’t hang your bag on the back of a chair in a café.
  • Watch your drink. Don’t leave drinks unattended in bars and clubs.
  • Quiet alleys at night. Stick to lit, busy streets late at night. The canals are beautiful, but some side streets are very empty after midnight.
  • Bikes. The biggest everyday danger for visitors. Don’t walk on the red-paved cycle lanes, and look both ways twice before crossing. If you cycle yourself, stay in the marked lanes and cross tram rails at an angle.
  • Emergencies. Call 112 for police, ambulance or fire. For non-urgent police matters, call 0900-8844.

A habit many experienced travellers use: tell someone at home where you’re going in the evening. It costs nothing.

How to spend your evenings alone

The evening is when solo travel can feel lonely, so it helps to have a plan:

  • Eat at the bar. In De Pijp and the Jordaan, plenty of restaurants have bar seating. It’s the most natural way to eat alone, and the staff will talk to you if you want.
  • Foodhallen. The indoor food hall in a former tram depot in Oud-West. Lively, informal and easy alone.
  • A film. Tuschinski, one of the most beautiful cinemas in Europe, is near Rembrandtplein. Or take the free ferry from behind Centraal Station across the IJ to the Eye Filmmuseum.
  • Music. A concert at the Concertgebouw is a wonderful solo evening; nobody notices whether you came alone.
  • A canal boat at night. The city lit up from the water, with no effort at all.

A dinner companion, so you don’t eat alone

Sometimes you don’t want another evening of your own thoughts. You’d like someone to sit across the table, to share a bottle of wine with, to walk back to the hotel with along the canals. That’s where I come in.

As a male companion, I can join you for dinner, a drink or an evening walk. If you want more than that, a date can continue at your hotel. You decide, and you can change your mind at any time. Nothing happens because the clock is running. If dinner and conversation is all you want, that’s a perfectly good date. And at the end of the evening, I’ll walk you back to your hotel if you’d like, so the last stretch along the canals isn’t one you do alone.

  • Two hours (€200): a drink and dinner, or dinner and a walk.
  • Three to four hours (€300–400): a long dinner, a walk along the canals, and time at your hotel.
  • Overnight (€600): company for the whole night, and breakfast. Not alone in a hotel room in a foreign city.
  • One hour (€120): a first meeting, a drink or a short visit.

Meeting a male escort safely as a solo traveller

Being careful is smart, and I’d rather you were. A few things that should be true of anyone you meet, including me:

  • Independent. I work for myself; nobody else takes a cut, and I chose this work. In the Netherlands, the client is responsible for making sure the person they meet works voluntarily and is of age.
  • Public information. I was a guest on a De Telegraaf podcast, and there are 8 public reviews of me on Kinky.nl, averaging 4.7 out of 5.
  • On your terms. You choose the place: your hotel room, booked in your name, or a quiet neutral place. You can start with a drink in a public bar.
  • Safe sex. I’m STI-tested and safe sex is standard.

Discretion

A first name is enough. I don’t ask for your surname, your job or where you live. I keep no records, take no photos and never message first after a date. At dinner, we’re simply two people eating together. If we ever run into each other again, I won’t greet you or look your way unless you greet me first.

I’m Milan, an independent male escort for women and couples aged 21 and over, working across the Netherlands. I am not a therapist and I don’t pretend to be one; where a question belongs with a professional, I say so and point you to one.

You don’t have to take my word for it. I talked about this work in a podcast by De Telegraaf, and a woman wrote about her experience in a guest article on Merle Hebing. On Kinky.nl there are 8 public reviews, averaging 4.7 out of 5. More about me on who is Milan.
